As you follow the Hindu religion, you’ll soon discover that there are also several prayers and chants that you can recite daily to help calm your mind and lead you to enlightenment throughout the day.
The Gayatri Mantra
The most famous mantra of all Hindu prayers is the Gayatri Mantra. It’s a Sanskrit prayer, which means it has no literal translation in English—however, it’s recited to fulfill personal goals for self-awareness and spiritual fulfillment. It consists of 10 syllables, each representing a different meaning or aspect of life.
The Shanti Mantra
The word Shanti means peace in Sanskrit. This chant is typically sung at sunrise and invokes divine blessings and inner calmness. It’s not only an excellent morning prayer but also a fantastic tool for self-reflection. What better way to commence your day than with a mantra dedicated to peace and prosperity? When you say these words out loud, it’s almost as if you’re talking to yourself—and that can be very therapeutic. This prayer also reminds us of our connection to all things: From where does all creation arise? It’s from one’s soul. That’s something we can all benefit from thinking about first thing in the morning!
The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
The great mantra of protection and purification, also known as aṣṭāvakhya, is an integral part of Hindu prayers. This powerful chant embodies Lord Shiva and ensures that one’s home, body, speech, and mind are always protected from negativity and evil forces. The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is chanted to remove all obstacles on our spiritual path; we may chant it for enlightenment or to cleanse our spirit to perform any religious ceremonies better. It’s considered auspicious to recite even a few lines of The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra daily.
Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional melody dedicated to Lord Hanuman, written by Tulsidas in the Awadhi language and adored by millions of followers of Hinduism. The word ‘Chalisa’ translates to forty, which means that there are forty verses in it. It was first published by Tulsidas in his work ‘Ramacharitamanas’ and has been translated into many languages over time, thus becoming one of the most famous religious songs among Hindus today. This prayer is chanted early in the mornings and late evenings, but you can even recite it anytime or at night!
Conclusion
Hindu worship is all about ‘bhakti,’ or, in simple terms, love. To express that love to God, they chant God’s names. There is a Hindu saying – He who chants God’s name attains purity in one lifetime. One of these chants is known as Japa and is a vital aspect of Hinduism. It aims at preparing us for meditation and spiritual enlightenment by helping us achieve ‘Nirvikalpa Samadhi’ or pure awareness in an elevated state where we are liberated from our ego. To reap the maximum benefit from chanting, it is recommended to do it on an empty stomach early in the morning.
