Significance and history
Lord Vishwakarma is the divine creator, and the main reason behind paying homage is to seek blessings for all creations that we regularly do in our lives. There is no defined history and dates that claim when the puja was started, but it’s believed that people have been celebrating it since ancient times.
Culturally it’s believed that the lord brings positivity and progress in mechanics, architecture, and artisans; that’s why it’s widely celebrated across factories.
Generally celebrated in
Like popular festivals of Raksha Bandhan or Diwali, Vishwakarma puja is not celebrated across the country. Instead, the celebrations are limited to a few states, including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerela, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. Also, in Nepal.
However, the Lord finds his unique place in Hinduism, and most people know his contributions. That is why he is widely believed across the country, but the celebrations are limited to particular states that have celebrated it since ancient times.
Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi
The lord is widely worshipped in offices, but this doesn’t mean you cannot worship him at home. Most people who don’t go to work still worship him at home. Here is what exactly you must do on puja day.
At home
Keep a fast all day to show respect towards the lord. You may have fruits. Also, it’s okay if you are not medically fit to keep a fast, you can still perform the rituals required for puja.
- Wake up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
- Collect flowers and other essentials you would need for the puja like Haldi, Chandan, Akshat, incense sticks, Paan, Fruits, Sweets and Clove.
- You can worship the lord’s idol or picture. Either one is fine.
- Start puja once you collect all items. Offer everything one by one and chant mantras.
- Also, make sure to do tilak of electronic items, tools and vehicles in your house as they are directly related to the lord.
- After tilak and offerings, chant mantras and perform arti to complete the puja successfully.
At last, eat prasad and give it to family members and neighbours. If possible, make donations in cash or kind and have a positive mood all day. You may even perform a small regular puja in the evening or light an earthen pot.
At office
The pooja Vidhi is the same for offices. You may worship the lord’s idol or painting and follow the abovementioned process. However, take care of a few things considering the puja will be conducted in the office.
- Make sure to tell all employees about the puja in advance. So, they can prepare and come on time.
- Request them to keep a fast if possible. Usually, the people who believe in Lord Vishwakarma will automatically do the fasting.
- Decorate your office with flowers and rangoli to promote a positive vibe and feeling of harmony.
- Try to involve all employees in puja and distribute prasad afterwards.
Having all employees in puja promotes the feeling of belongingness, but please don’t force anyone and always conduct the puja in a Shubh Muhurat. Many people organise a yagna on this day, but it depends on you, and it’s not compulsory.
Some people celebrate Vishwakarma puja a day after Diwali along with Govardhan puja. It depends on the tradition your ancestors have followed, but no matter when you celebrate it, the puja Vidhi will remain the same.
Things to avoid on Vishwakarma puja day
There are certain things that everyone must avoid doing on this day. It’s believed that doing the things mentioned below on puja day promotes negative energy, and ideally, all your efforts to have a successful celebration go in vain.
- Don’t use any equipment on this day, even if you made them! Although it’s the puja of tools, you must let your devices and machines rest for a day. You can use them from the next day onwards.
- Please don’t consume alcohol on this day. The lord doesn’t like it, and drinking means disrespecting his choices.
- Most importantly, try to stay away from negativity and say bad words to others. The motive of any puja is to bring positivity into our lives, and hurting someone’s emotions on this auspicious day is not good.
Consuming meat is debatable. In states like West Bengal, where meat and fish are essential dishes, people proudly eat them on puja day, whereas in other states, it’s a big culture, no-no.
The decision to have meat depends on you, or you may ask a local priest as he lives in the same area and would be the best person to gain the proper knowledge.
Conclusion
In Hinduism, every invention or modern amenity is connected with one or the other god. It easily relates us to technology and keeps us culturally active. If you know Lord Vishwakarma’s tremendous contributions but still don’t celebrate his birth anniversary, it’s time to consider worshipping.
According to the Gregorian calendar, the Vishwakarma puja date remains almost the same every year. It’s a birth anniversary, not a festival, so the date hardly changes. This year the puja will be celebrated on 17th September; the Muhurat time will vary.
Please try to follow all points we mentioned in this article. It’s OK if you miss any of these points but don’t forget to seek the lord’s forgiveness for mistakes. Have a prosperous puja and a positive mood all day. I wish you a Happy Vishwakarma Puja in advance.
